“The Earth is a fine place worth fighting for.” — Ernest Hemingway

Exciting news! SA+C Inc. is spearheading Nantucket's first Salvage exhibit during Daffodil Weekend this April with support from Nantucket Preservation Trust and Remain. The Island has long been pressured by the costly need to export thousands of tons of waste off Island each year. Construction waste, especially, threatens, Nantucket’s unique architectural heritage and natural beauty.

Remain recently funded a study on the feasibility of a salvage center on the Island and the verdict was a resounding yes!

The Salvage Exhibit will provide the opportunity to show the many wonderful options for incorporating reclaimed wood into projects and the various creative projects and high-end home items that can be made from it.
Through the exhibit, SA+C Inc. also aims to support a broader movement of deconstruction and waste diversion on the island.

Salvage & Sustainability at SA+C Inc.

Salvage is a way to honor the story and history of a place — maybe an old family home, a historic building, or a special piece of furniture, no longer usable, but worth preserving in a special way.

Salvage also supports sustainability in a key way: it greatly reduces construction and demolition waste that gets sent to the precious, ever-shrinking space in landfills.

Did you know?

  • Globally around 30-40% of waste comes from the construction industry .

  • Every year 17,000 tons of construction waste is transported off the island of Nantucket

  • 40% of construction waste is wood waste, which can be reused in beautiful ways.

  • Practicing deconstruction over demolition and salvaging usable architecture materials and products not only diverts construction waste in landfills, but also does many other great things!

Salvaged wood enables great things:

1. Adds character and style to a remodel or redesign project
2. Preserves the history of a structure
3. Saves on costs for new materials
4. Tells the story of the home
5. Adds value to the home and creates jobs
6. Promotes sustainable adaptive reuse + creates new uses for old things

  • SALVAGE ON NANTUCKET

SA+C’s vision for a Nantucket Salvage Center incorporates intentional design that honors Nantucket’s unique history and architectural heritage, preserves its natural beauty, and improves the social health of the island’s residents and visitors.

The Center would collect, store and distribute architectural materials (primarily wood) to the Island, with the goal to create a broader movement of deconstruction and waste diversion on the island.
